Peripheral Vascular Laboratory

The vascular system is the network of blood vessels that circulate blood to and from the heart and lungs. Specialists at Mount Sinai South Nassau use a state-of-the-art lab to diagnose conditions related to the vascular system. It’s called the Noninvasive Peripheral Vascular Laboratory. "Noninvasive" refers to technology that helps us diagnose conditions without the need for traditional surgery. “Vascular” has to do with how well blood vessels work to carry blood throughout the body. And “peripheral” refers to areas of the body further from the heart, such as the legs and arms.

Vascular diseases are very common, especially as people age. Our team specializes in diagnosing these conditions, so that they do not lead to serious health problems. We work with a variety of other heart experts, including cardiologists and radiologists, to form the most accurate diagnosis and best treatment plan. And our testing is delivered by highly experienced vascular technologists who are registered, a level of expertise which is unique to Mount Sinai South Nassau's team of professionals.

We’re also experienced in performing noninvasive studies, using ultrasound, for example. Ultrasound is a painless test using sound waves, which allows our experts to look directly inside the veins or arteries. Risks of complications are quite small with such tests. And these potentially lifesaving studies often take less than an hour.

Common vascular conditions we evaluate:

• Aortic aneurysm: a bulge in the aorta, the main artery leading from the heart
  
• Carotid artery disease (CAD): a narrowing of the carotid artery, the main artery in the neck that supplies blood to the brain
  
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): a blood clot in a vein deep in the body, which runs to the heart
  
• Peripheral artery disease (PAD): narrowing of the arteries in the legs and pelvis, for example
  
• Peripheral vascular disease (PVD): narrowing of blood vessels that take blood to the legs, arms, stomach or kidneys
  

Common noninvasive vascular tests we do include:

• Ankle-brachial indices (ABI) to evaluate blood flow in the legs
  
• Mapping of the arteries and veins
  
• Ultrasound of the carotid artery, which supplies blood from the heart to the head
  
• Endovascular treatment of aortic aneurysm, in which we repair the damaged blood vessel (aorta) from inside the blood vessel
  
• Peripheral ultrasound
  
• Pulse volume recordings
  
• Renal artery ultrasound
  
• Surveillance, or monitoring, of grafts in the upper and lower extremity, after a bypass operation 
  
• Velocity waveform studies (spectral analysis) to evaluate the speed of blood flow
  
• Venous reflux testing to evaluate conditions related to blood flow, such as varicose veins, pain or swelling in the arms or legs
