Is Weight Loss Surgery Right for You?
Do not be concerned if you’re not in the best of health before surgery. Many patients are actually in poor health because of diseases caused by their obesity, like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, lung problems and kidney difficulties.
Whether or not surgery is right for you is a discussion you should have with your primary care physician, your family and your weight loss surgeon. But to help you get started, here are some things to consider.
Weight loss surgery might be a good option if you:
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above
- Have made serious attempts to lose weight in the past
- Are between 18 and 70 years of age
- Do not have a disease that may be causing excess weight
- Have no drug, alcohol or emotional problems
- Understand the surgery and its risks
- Do not plan to get pregnant in the first two years after surgery
