Diagnosis
Diagnosis: Getting the Complete Picture
Most often, a primary care physician refers patients to the Wound Care Center. But you can also call us directly to schedule an evaluation.
When meeting with each patient, the first steps for our team of wound care experts are to identify:
- The underlying cause of the wound
- A barrier to proper healing
Conditions that might affect how well a wound heals are: poor blood circulation, which is common with diabetes and other diseases that affect blood circulation, for example; poor nutrition; smoking; repeated trauma, such as pressure from beds, wheelchairs or shoes; infection; the presence of dead tissue in or around the open wound; and other medical conditions.
We review each patient’s medical history, including records from other specialists you might have seen; perform a physical exam; and complete lab work, X-rays or ultrasounds, for example, to get a complete understanding of your health.
