Advanced Cancer Care Treatment
Learn More About Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Cancer Treatment Programs
Mount Sinai South Nassau is the only cancer treatment program on Long Island to offer the combination of the Novalis Tx™, da Vinci® Surgical System and Gamma Knife® — making many of our services unique in the region. For screening, diagnosis and treatment, each of our cancer care specialists offers the highest levels of expertise using these and other advanced equipment and procedures.
Our cancer treatment specialists have been in the forefront of using surgical tools and techniques. These “minimally invasive” techniques provide us with the ability to use much smaller incisions, for example, while giving us precision not possible with the human hand alone. Advantages to our patients include faster treatments, shorter recovery times and less discomfort. And our digital, or computerized, database allows us to provide patients faster, more accurate diagnosis as well as rapid reporting to their health care team.
Advanced Tools and Techniques:
Our interventional radiologists use a variety of imaging, including: CT and magnetic resonance (MR) angiography, CT lung cancer screening, CT colonography (“virtual colonoscopy”), MRI and PET scans.
Our specialists in radiation oncology use computer-assisted tools to treat cancer using large doses of highly targeted radiation, which limits damage to healthy tissue. And new technology here at South Nassau allows us to provide radiation treatment in roughly half the time, compared to other equipment.
Our interventional radiologists use computer-guided X-rays, CT scans and MRI to treat patients without the need for traditional, or “open” surgery. Our advanced cancer treatment includes cryoablation (using cold to kill cancer cells) and radiofrequency (RF) ablation (using electricity and heat to kill cancer cells), for example.
Our thoracic oncology specialists perform video-assisted thoracoscopy surgery (VATS), which uses small incisions to reduce pain and speed recovery.
