Division of Trauma & Surgical Critical Care
The Mount Sinai South Nassau Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care & Acute Care Surgery provides exceptional care for adults and is designed to respond to emergencies 24/7 with fully equipped state of the art trauma bays, operating rooms and critical care units. Whether a trauma patient or a patient with a surgical emergency, they will be seen by a multidisciplinary team of specialists including trauma surgeons, trauma and critical care nurses, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologist, radiologists, and other surgical and medical specialists. Our mission is to save lives and send patients back to their families.
Trauma Program
The Mount Sinai South Nassau Trauma Center is designated a Level II Trauma Center by the state of New York and is nationally verified as a Level II Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. This means that our Trauma Program meets the highest achievable standards for trauma care. The Division of Trauma at Mount Sinai South Nassau handles close to 2,000 acute traumas annually, and is the only trauma center located on the South Shore of Nassau County. Our multidisciplinary team is engaged not only in clinical care but in the education and training of future surgeons through our accredited surgical residency program and research.
Surgical Critical Care
Surgical Critical Care manages all critically ill surgical patients through its critical care services (Surgical Intensive Care Unit or STICU). These clinical services are performed by a dedicated group of surgeons who provide around-the-clock, in-house coverage, 365 days a year. These surgeons have advanced training in the care and management of the critically ill or injured patient.

Kenneth Becker, MD
Interim Trauma Medical Director
Dr. Kenneth Becker is a General Surgery Specialist with over 36 years of experience in the medical field. He graduated from New York State University, College of Medicine - Downstate Medical School in 1986 and completed a residency at Nassau University Medical Center. Dr. Becker is board certified in General Surgery.

Foula Kontonicolas, MD
Medical Director, Surgical Critical Care
Dr. Kontonicolas is board certified in General Surgery and specializes in Trauma Critical Care. She completed a fellowship in Trauma Critical Care at Hartford Hospital / University of Connecticut in Hartford, CT and her residency in General Surgery at Danbury Hospital in Danbury, CT. She has been a Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Surgeon at Mount Sinai South Nassau since 2016.

Florian Radu, DO
Trauma Critical Care
Dr. Radu specializes in Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery. He completed his fellowship in Trauma/Surgical Critical Care at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY, and his residency in General Surgery at Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Flushing, NY. Dr. Radu’s interests include management of complex general surgical patients, including minimally invasive small bowel, colon and hernia surgeries. He performs both laparoscopic and open procedures.

Dr. Smith is board certified in General Surgery and Critical Care. He completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine in Hempstead, NY. He completed his residency in General Surgery at University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, CO.

Trauma Critical Care
Bianca Nkechi Redhead, MD is board certified in General Surgery. She earned her medical degree and completed her residency in General Surgery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Dr. Redhead completed her Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Mount Sinai / Elmhurst Hospital in New York, NY. Dr. Redhead earned a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.
