Breast Cancer Risks and Prevention
The radiologists and staff at the Mount Sinai South Nassau Center for Women's Imaging know that mammography and other imaging techniques play a critical role in the early detection of breast cancer. Education is important, too. So our experts are dedicated to helping you learn about your risk of breast cancer, and we can help you take full advantage of the latest advances to find cancer early.
The Best Defense Is Early Detection
- Have an annual breast exam by your physician
- Practice monthly breast self-exams
- Have a baseline mammogram at age 35
- Have an annual screening mammogram after age 40
- Learn about your options for breast imaging
- Be aware of your personal risk for breast cancer and if earlier screenings are best for you
- Visit us for a personal risk assessment
Screening Exams Are Part of Our Focus
Do you need a screening exam for breast cancer? Age is the biggest risk factor for breast cancer. So beginning at age 40, get a mammogram every year, according to recommendations of medical organizations like the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association and the American College of Radiology. Many women also get a “baseline mammogram” at age 35, which your radiologist will use to compare to later mammograms.
If you have a family history or genetic risk (such as the BRCA gene) of breast cancer, talk to your doctor about when and how often you need screenings. You might benefit from both regular mammograms and our specialized breast MRI.
Whether you have a normal risk or high risk for breast cancer, our staff is committed to helping you learn how to detect any cancer early — when it’s easiest to treat.
