Anesthesiology Residency Program

General Surgery Residency Program

The Mount Sinai South Nassau Anesthesiology Residency Program is newly established and detailed, year-by-year curriculum specifics are still emerging. The program is part of the Mount Sinai Health System and follows the standard 4-year categorical structure for anesthesiology.

This categorical program includes a crucial Clinical Base Year (CBY or PGY-1) followed by three years of Clinical Anesthesia (CA-1, CA-2, and CA-3) training. The residency is sponsored by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, ensuring high academic standards and access to broader system resources.

Program Overview

The categorical 4-year Anesthesiology Residency Program at Mount Sinai South Nassau (MSSN) in Oceanside, Long Island, is designed to train expert, board-eligible anesthesiologists through a blend of strong clinical experience in a community-based hospital and the academic rigor of an affiliated medical school.

  • Structure: Categorical (PGY-1 to PGY-4)
  • Sponsorship: Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
  • Primary Site: Mount Sinai South Nassau, a 455-bed Long Island flagship hospital for the Mount Sinai Health System.
  • Focus: Training for increasingly complex procedures, including the expansion of cardiac and other high-acuity surgical services at MSSN.

Curriculum Breakdown

PGY-1 (Clinical Base Year - CBY)

The initial year provides a foundational base in clinical medicine, critical care, and perioperative management, preparing residents for specialized anesthesia training. Our CBY for our ACGME-accredited anesthesiology categorical program includes:

  • Family Medicine: Three months of inpatient family medicine.
  • Critical Care: Two one-month rotations in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), such as Medical or Cardiac ICU.
  • Surgery and Surgical Subspecialties: Three months in general surgery and potentially other surgical disciplines (e.g., ENT, Orthopedics, Vascular).
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Anesthesiology: Introductory rotations in Operating Room (OR) Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management.
  • Elective Rotations: Can be done in Cardiology, Pulmonology, Rapid Response, Ultrasound, or Labor and Delivery

PGY-2 (Clinical Anesthesia - CA-1)

The first clinical anesthesia year is dedicated to mastering the fundamentals of safe anesthetic practice.

  • Initial Orientation: A one-month intensive period focused on basic principles, equipment, pre-anesthetic evaluation, and one-on-one faculty mentorship.
  • General Anesthesia: Extensive rotation in non-specialty and general surgical cases (e.g., Orthopedics, General Surgery, Gynecology) to build a solid base of skills.
  • Introductory Subspecialty Rotations: Early exposure to key subspecialties like Obstetric Anesthesia, Preoperative Testing, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and Pain Management.
  • Didactics: A robust didactic program focused on preparing residents for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) BASIC examination.

PGY-3 (Clinical Anesthesia - CA-2)

The second clinical year focuses on mastering the breadth of anesthesia subspecialties and managing more medically complex patients.

  • Subspecialty Rotations: Required rotations in core subspecialties, including:
    • Cardiac Anesthesia
    • Neuro-anesthesia
    • Pediatric Anesthesia at Mount Sinai Hospital
    • Critical Care (e.g., Cardiothoracic ICU) at Mount Sinai Hospital
    • Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management
    • Chronic Pain Management
    • Obstetric Anesthesia
  • Advanced Experience: Residents take on more responsibility, managing patients with increasingly complicated medical histories and high-acuity surgical procedures.

PGY-4 (Clinical Anesthesia - CA-3)

The final year provides opportunities for specialization, advanced clinical leadership, and career preparation.

  • Advanced Clinical Experience: Rotations focusing on the most complex or difficult cases and assuming senior-level clinical and supervisory roles.
  • Elective Time: Significant elective blocks allowing residents to focus on a particular subspecialty for fellowship preparation (e.g., advanced cardiac, advanced regional, research, or a leadership track).
  • Leadership Role: Assuming roles with increasing autonomy, often acting as a team leader or 'chief' resident in clinical settings.
  • Scholarly Activity: Completion of a scholarly project, such as research, quality improvement, or a teaching curriculum.

Unique Program Features

As a Mount Sinai Health System affiliate, the program likely offers:

  • Academic Resources: Access to the educational and research resources of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
  • Diverse Case Mix: Exposure to a broad range of surgical cases common in a community setting, as well as increasingly complex, high-acuity cases (e.g., trauma, cardiac surgery, hepatobiliary) as the hospital expands its services.
  • Long Island Location: Training in a suburban community setting on the South Shore of Long Island, providing a different clinical environment than the high-volume Manhattan hospitals.
