Body Mass Index (BMI)
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on your height and weight and determines your weight category (see chart below). It is also used as a tool to determine if you are a candidate for weight loss surgery. Use the BMI calculator below:
Weight category |
BMI kg/m2 |
Underweight |
<18.5 |
Normal |
18.5-24.9 |
Overweight |
25-29.9 |
Obesity |
30-34.9 |
Severe Obesity |
35-39.9 |
Morbid Obesity |
>=40 |
Super Obesity |
>=50 |
According to the National Institute of Health, you can be a surgical candidate if you have a BMI of 35 kg/m2 with at least one co-morbidity or BMI 40 kg/m2.
