Anesthesiology Residency

Mount Sinai South Nassau Anesthesiology Residency

Welcome! We’re thrilled that you’re considering the recently accredited ACGME Categorical 4-Year Anesthesiology Residency Program at Mount Sinai South Nassau (MSSN), sponsored by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. This program represents a unique opportunity to train at a high-volume, continuously expanding community hospital while benefiting from the academic rigor of a world-class health system.

Our mission is clear: to mold the next generation of anesthesiologists into expert perioperative physicians—clinicians who are technically skilled, academically grounded, and leaders in patient safety and well-being.

The MSSN Advantage: Community-Based Excellence

Our residency provides the ideal balance for comprehensive training:

1. Robust Clinical Volume and Diversity

  • Breadth of Cases: As a full-service community hospital and the only Level II Trauma Center in the area, you'll gain extensive experience managing the full spectrum of anesthesia—from routine "bread-and-butter" cases to high-acuity trauma, complex orthopedic, and major surgical oncology procedures.
  • Advanced Practice: Residents are exposed to cutting-edge techniques, including advanced Robotic Surgery (Colorectal, Urologic, and Thoracic) and the foundational principles of a developing Open Heart Surgery and Structural Heart service line.
  • Foundational Skills: Your training provides a strong foundation in General Anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia, and Acute Pain Management within a supportive, hands-on environment.

2. Academic Sponsorship by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Clinical Affiliation with Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) and Partnership with Greater New York Anesthesia Services, P.C. (GNYAS)

  • Integrated Curriculum: Our program is fully integrated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, providing residents with access to system-wide resources, specialized lectures, and protected didactic time.
  • Subspecialty Expertise: While MSSN offers a rich core experience, key subspecialty rotations—including Pediatric Anesthesia (at Kravis Children's Hospital and affiliate sites), Cardiac Anesthesia, and advanced Critical Care—will be completed at Mount Sinai's Manhattan campuses, ensuring maximum exposure to tertiary and quaternary care.
  • The role of Greater New York Anesthesia Services, P.C. (GNYAS) is instrumental to the educational foundation and clinical operations of the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Mount Sinai South Nassau (MSSN). GNYAS is a physician-led anesthesia group that provides full anesthesia services at MSSN, and its involvement directly enhances the resident education experience in the following ways:
  • Evidence-Based Protocols: GNYAS emphasizes clinical quality, operational efficiency, and evidence-based protocols. Residents are educated within a system that utilizes data quality and analytics to track performance and drive continuous improvement, a vital component of modern resident training.
  • Business of Medicine: Through its strategic support from the Mount Sinai Health System and U.S. Anesthesia Partners (USAP), GNYAS exposes residents to the business and administrative side of the profession—including practice management, operational efficiency, billing, and payer contracting—essential skills for any future practice setting.

3. A Supportive Learning Environment

  • Hands-On Mentorship: Our smaller program size fosters a close-knit, collegial atmosphere with high attending-to-resident ratios. You will work closely with dedicated faculty who are committed to your success and professional development.
  • Long Island Life: Located on the beautiful South Shore, MSSN offers an excellent quality of life with proximity to beaches and the vibrant Long Island community, all while being a short and easy commute to the cultural hub of New York City.

We seek highly motivated individuals who are eager to embrace the challenges and rewards of building this outstanding new program. Join us as we build a legacy of excellence for anesthesiology training in Long Island.
