Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery (HPB) Program
The Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery (HPB) program at Mount Sinai South Nassau (MSSN) offers state-of-the-art treatment for patients with primary and metastatic cancers of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct, and pancreas. Our program also addresses benign conditions such as cysts, strictures, and injuries. We have established standard pathways for both outpatient and inpatient care, ensuring that Long Island patients receive comprehensive pre- and post-operative care from our specialized team in Long Island.
Our approach is highly collaborative, working across specialties to identify the optimal treatment for each patient with liver, gallbladder, bile duct, and pancreatic diseases. Within Mount Sinai Health System, we perform over 400 hepatobiliary and pancreatic resections annually, maintaining one of the world’s lowest mortality rates. Personally, I have performed over 1,000 of these procedures in my career. Our team of dedicated physicians and ancillary staff is committed to delivering exceptional patient care.
Mount Sinai Health System is among the few centers nationally that perform advanced minimally invasive liver and pancreatic procedures. While some complex and large tumors still require open operations, many procedures can be performed minimally invasively, resulting in shorter hospitalization and recovery times, and a reduced likelihood of postoperative complications. This approach also allows many patients with significant comorbidities to receive surgical treatment.
For advanced cases requiring major resections, our team, which includes surgeons with transplant experience and surgical oncologists, applies its expertise to perform complex resection and reconstruction. This collaborative approach enables us to resect cancers involving major blood vessels, often deemed inoperable at other institutions.
We offer precision treatment for all stages of liver, bile duct, and pancreatic cancer. To stay at the forefront of potential treatment options, we integrate molecular and genetic data into our patients’ care whenever possible. Our patients also have access to the most advanced clinical trials. We are truly committed to creating an environment of excellence in patient care and innovation at Mount Sinai Health System.
