Biopsy & Surgery
Biopsy for Diagnosis and Treatment
If a screening test or exam shows a lump or abnormality in the breast, thyroid or other organs, our experienced radiologists use computer-guided equipment and advanced techniques to get tissue samples, or biopsies. For every biopsy, our goal at the Mount Sinai South Nassau Center for Women's Imaging is precision, compassion and safety. So in the comfort of our offices, located in Oceanside, we offer a full range of advanced biopsy techniques. For example, in “guided image” techniques, we create images, or pictures, that guide our radiologists to the exact area of the body for biopsy. These state-of-the-art guided image procedures include:
- Ultrasound
- Specialized “stereotactic” mammography for the breast
- MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
- “Aspiration,” using a very thin needle to collect fluid and cells
Our pathologists, or physicians who are experts in evaluating tissues, can use these samples to determine whether or not cancer is present. With the precise information we can get from a biopsy, our experts can determine the best course of care for you.
Imaging and Surgery
Our radiology experts also work with the surgical team, using images to locate the precise area of surgery, even before you enter an operating room. We perform these “localization” procedures right in our offices, and then escort you to the surgery suite.
