From the Program Director

Welcome to the General Surgery Residency Program at Mount Sinai South Nassau. I am honored to lead this program at a time of real growth and momentum. Let me share what we stand for — and what it might feel like to train here.

Our first commitment is technical excellence. You will operate early, operate often, and take on more responsibility as your judgment and skill grow. But we do not believe a surgeon is finished in the operating room. The surgeons we are proudest to train are the ones who can make a difficult decision, sit with a frightened family, stay steady when the textbook answer is no longer enough, and care for the person — not just the disease.

Mount Sinai South Nassau offers the best parts of a community program with the reach of a larger academic system. Our residents train across a broad and increasingly complex surgical experience, including colorectal surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic oncology, bariatrics, breast surgery, melanoma, vascular surgery, acute care surgery, and head and neck surgery. They also rotate at Mount Sinai in Manhattan and Cohen Children’s Hospital, gaining exposure to tertiary and pediatric surgical care while remaining grounded in the close mentorship of a community-based program.

This is also a program that expects curiosity. Within the scope of a busy clinical training environment, our residents ask meaningful questions, participate in scholarly work, publish, and present. We are not trying to turn every resident into the same surgeon. We are trying to help each resident find the path that fits their ability, ambition, and purpose.

What ties the program together is the relationship between residents and faculty. We are small enough that our attendings know you — not as a name on a schedule, but as a developing surgeon and a person. That means mentorship in the operating room, but also in the decisions that shape a career: how you think, how you lead, what kind of surgeon you want to become, and what fellowship or practice path will get you there.
