Mount Sinai South Nassau’s ongoing effort to help restore specialty medical services to the barrier island in the wake of Superstorm Sandy will take a major step forward with the opening of Mount Sinai Doctors-Long Beach multispecialty medical pavilion.
The $35 million state-of-the-art pavilion, which is located on the hospital’s Long Beach campus (formerly Long Beach Medical Center), represents a fulfillment of a promise the hospital made to barrier island residents to help provide medical services after the storm. Utilizing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and state funding, Mount Sinai South Nassau has now invested more than $73 million in its health care revitalization plan for Long Beach, which includes the Long Beach Emergency Department, Long Island’s only free-standing, 911-receiving emergency department, and Mount Sinai South Nassau-Long Beach, Primary Care.
“This new, state-of-the-art site represents our commitment to help restore specialty medical services on the barrier island,” said Adhi Sharma, MD, President of Mount Sinai South Nassau. “The facility will provide leading medical specialists who can care for a wide range of conditions. And we plan to expand services there over time as the need demands.”
Mount Sinai Doctors-Long Beach is located at 440 East Bay Drive and offers an array of specialty medical services, including:
- Cardiology and cardiology testing
- Gastroenterology
- Urology
- Pain management and pain procedures
- Lab services
- X-ray and ultrasound imaging
Physicians practicing at the pavilion are cardiologists Jason Esses, MD, and Michael Sood, MD; urologist Steven Harris, MD; and gastroenterologist Joel Loewenstein, MD. The pain management practice, which will offer the full range of fluoroscopic- and ultrasound-guided therapies to treat chronic pain, will begin seeing patients this fall.
The pavilion has 15 comfortably furnished private patient examination rooms, four procedure rooms, an X-ray room, and eight rooms for procedure preparation and recovery. Its electronic health record system allows patients to easily access their health records, schedule appointments, renew medications, and obtain information about the care they receive from any Mount Sinai Doctors practice.
The new site will create approximately 30 new jobs, including medical assistants, front desk support, and X-ray techs, as well as physicians and lab techs.
It also features a hospital-grade air filtration system and space planning guidelines to reduce the spread of potentially infectious disease. Entryways and bathroom facilities are touchless to reduce the possibility of infection spread. As is standard with all Mount Sinai Doctors facilities, it features an attractive interior design and décor with fully furnished lounge areas and an appealing exterior with manicured landscaping that complements the surrounding neighborhood.
Initial hours of operation for most clinical services will be 8 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday. Weekday evenings and Saturday hours will be phased in over time. Mount Sinai Doctors-Long Beach joins Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Long Beach Emergency Department at 325 East Bay Drive; Mount Sinai South Nassau-Long Beach, Primary Care at 761 Franklin Boulevard; and Mount Sinai Doctors-Long Beach, Primary Care at 325 West Park Avenue, forming an integrated, community-based network of medical services easily accessible to local residents.
“We made a commitment to Long Beach, and today that vision becomes a reality,” said Anthony Cancellieri, Co-Chair of Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Board of Directors. “The pavilion is the anchor of and an important milestone in the hospital’s mission to ensure that residents have access to the advanced health care that they need and deserve, without having to go over the bridge.”
“We are excited to bring these services to Long Beach, all under one roof,” said David Bonagura, Co-Chair of Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Board of Directors. “The opening of this new facility, coupled with the Emergency Department and our other medical practices, means residents now have the choice not to leave the barrier island for specialty health care.”
“We are pleased to see these much-needed medical services and employment opportunities return to Long Beach,” said Long Beach Acting City Manager and Police Commissioner Ronald J. Walsh, Jr. “The services that will be offered at this facility address many of the health care voids that have existed on the barrier island since Sandy. The opening of Pavilion is also an important step toward rebuilding what was once a thriving sector of Long Beach’s economy.”
“I am certain that the Mount Sinai Doctors - Long Beach multispecialty physician and medical pavilion will be an invaluable asset to the health, wellness and quality of life to our community and residents," said Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford. "In addition to offering barrier island residents convenient access to a wide range medical specialists and advanced diagnostic imaging and lab testing services, it will serve as a magnet to attract other essential medical specialists and healthcare services needed by the community, which will in time establish a island-wide network of healthcare services and providers centered on the needs of the residents.”
With the help of a state grant, the hospital purchased the Long Beach Medical Center property in bankruptcy after Superstorm Sandy, making it eligible for $174 million in FEMA funds. The hospital was the only health care institution to come forward during the bankruptcy proceeding to bid on the property. Under an alternative-use provision of FEMA legislation, the hospital was permitted to use some of the FEMA funds at its Oceanside campus to fortify the hospital against future storms and expand services for the South Shore of Nassau County.
More than $100 million of the FEMA funds were used to build a new power plant and four-story patient pavilion at the hospital’s Oceanside campus that will double the size of the Emergency Department, add 40 critical care beds, and nine new operating rooms. When Long Beach residents need advanced treatment, they will benefit from the new patient pavilion and additional services planned in Oceanside, including open heart surgery (pending Department of Health approval). The hospital also used its own funds and donations from the community to advance these projects as part of a $500 million expansion campaign.
