Biography

Dr. Koutsoumbelis is an Orthopedic Spinal Surgeon who specializes in the management of all spinal and scoliosis disorders. Dr. Koutsoumbelis serves as the acting Chief of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, NY. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Tulane University, and his medical degree from the University of Akron. He then completed his Orthopedic Surgical residency at North Shore University Hospital. After which he went on to complete a fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, which focused on spinal deformity, scoliosis, and degenerative spinal conditions.

In addition, Dr. Koutsoumbelis went on to receive advanced spinal oncology training at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, which has afforded the ability for him to treat spinal tumors as well. He then returned to Long Island, where he grew up, to go into private practice.

Dr. Koutsoumbelis serves as the Orthopedic Spinal Surgeon for the Chiari Neurosurgical Institute of Long Island, where he is frequently called upon to perform spinal procedures for patients with both EDS and Chiari, some of whom, travel from other countries seeking treatment.

All of the patients that Dr. Koutsoumbelis treats, first undergo a comprehensive evaluation, with most being managed with non-operative interventions such as physical therapy or pain management. For the small percentage of patients that do require surgery, Dr. Koutsoumbelis performs a full spectrum of surgical procedures that range from minimally invasive to complex spinal reconstruction.

Dr. Koutsoumbelis sees patients at multiple locations including Rockville Centre and Massapequa. He is an active member in both the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery (AAOS), North American Spine Society (NASS), the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), and the International Society for the Advancement of Spinal Surgery (ISASS).
