Biography

Dr. Kevin Gurcharran is an attending physician and assistant professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He sees patients at Mount Sinai South Nassau and also provides care at the NYC Health and Hospitals facilities, namely Elmhurst Hospital and Queens Hospital. Additionally, he serves as the site director at Elmhurst for the child neurology residency program.

Dr. Gurcharran obtained his medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He completed his residency in Pediatric and Child Neurology at Cohens Children’s Medical Center at Northwell Health, followed by a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. Before returning to the Mount Sinai health system, he worked as an attending physician at NYP Weill Cornell. Throughout his training and medical practice, he has developed a solid foundation in diagnosing and treating neurological conditions in children, with a particular focus on seizures, epilepsy, and various medical, nonmedical, and surgical treatments for epilepsy. Dr. Gurcharran's primary interest within academic medicine lies in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows.

Originally from Jamaica, Queens, Dr. Gurcharran was raised there and attended high school at Bronx Science. He pursued his undergraduate education at New York University. Having lived and worked in diverse communities throughout New York, he possesses a deep appreciation for the city's way of life, along with an understanding of the associated challenges. Driven by the unique stories of each patient and family, he recognizes the need for individualized approaches to problem-solving. Drawing from personal experience as someone who had a prolonged febrile seizure, he empathizes with both the patients and their parents. As a parent himself, Dr. Gurcharran has firsthand insight into the anxiety and concern that arise when a child is unwell. His genuine commitment lies in providing comprehensive care and support for children and their caregivers facing neurological conditions. Recognizing the limits of his knowledge, he embraces the opportunity to learn and collaborate with colleagues, utilizing the latest medical literature and welcoming insights from parents who bring their own research. If a problem falls outside his expertise, Dr. Gurcharran readily refers patients to specialists who can provide the necessary care. Above all, his priority is to assist and guide individuals in the best way possible during these challenging times, fostering an atmosphere of continual learning and compassionate care.
