South Nassau is the only Hospital in New York State to Earn Five Top Awards in Women’s Care from Healthgrades

South Nassau Communities Hospital today announced that is has been named a 2018 5-Star Recipient for all four Women’s Care cohorts as well as the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™ by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

In addition, South Nassau is the only hospital in New York State to achieve all five of the following awards in 2018 from Healthgrades in women’s health services lines:

  • Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™ (6 years in a row)
  • Five Star for Gynecologic Procedures (6 years in a row)
  • Five-Star for Hysterectomy (4 years in a row)
  • Five Star for C-Section Delivery
  • Five Star for Vaginal Delivery

These awards, based on comparison outcome data, place South Nassau among a select group of hospitals in the US — the top 5 percent of all hospitals evaluated for gynecologic procedures and the top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated for providing outstanding quality outcomes in gynecologic surgery. Patients have a lower chance of experiencing a complication when treated at hospitals receiving one or more of Healthgrades’ Women’s Care Specialty Excellence Awards than if they were treated in hospitals that were not recipients, according to Healthgrades.

South Nassau has multiple accreditations, designations and awards for its women’s health services including accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers; Baby-Friendly Hospital designation and Becker's Hospital Review list of "100 Hospitals with Great Women's Health Programs.”  The hospital’s scope of women's healthcare services includes breast health, obstetrics and gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, genetic counseling, women's imaging, and gynecologic oncology.

“From high-risk pregnancies and infertility to breast cancer and reproductive malignancies, the Healthgrades awards testify to our long-standing commitment to ensure that women have convenient access to the very best care, right here on the South Shore,” said Richard J. Murphy, South Nassau's president and CEO.

“The Healthgrades 2018 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award recognizes hospitals for exceptional performance and helps consumers find the right care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “High-quality outcomes are a top priority for consumers when choosing hospitals, and the recipients of this award stand out due to their records of success.”

To demonstrate the difference in quality and outcomes between hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award and those that did not and to help consumers evaluate and compare hospitals’ performance in gynecologic surgery, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcome data for all patients (all-payer data) made available by 15 individual states and the District of Columbia for years 2014 through 2016.

The analysis found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, had, on average, a 46.3 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. It also revealed that if all hospitals in the analysis performed similarly to those receiving the Healthgrades Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 12,637 patients.

“The awards are a direct result of our multi-disciplinary healthcare team of top-notch physicians and nurses that utilize the latest medical technologies and treatments to deliver high-quality healthcare tailored to the specific needs of women,” added Alan Garely, MD, chair of obstetrics and gynecology at South Nassau and clinical professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

South Nassau’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers women access to specialized health care for optimum treatment of reproductive health conditions, from endometrial biopsies and colposcopies to gynecologic oncology. At South Nassau's Women's Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders, all-too-common conditions such as incontinence and constipation are effectively diagnosed and treated using state-of-the-art technology administered by highly skilled surgeons. South Nassau is one of only a handful of locations in the country that offers this service.

In February 2018, South Nassau opened the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine, the only center of its kind based on the South Shore of Nassau County, where highly skilled and trained obstetricians are combining with advanced medical technology to provide the specialized care mothers and unborn children may need to monitor and manage conditions that if left untreated could jeopardize the health and wellbeing of the child, mother or both.

In the hospital’s Center for New Beginnings, a team of experienced obstetricians, labor and delivery nurses and high-risk pregnancy specialists delivered 1,928 babies in 2017. In addition to advanced maternal-fetal medical technologies, the Center features 26 private family/newborn rooms with first-class hotel like accommodations, spacious labor and delivery rooms, and a 6-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Staffed by board-certified neonatologists, the NICU is equipped with the dedicated medical technologies that premature deliveries and newborns with developmental complications or conditions require. The Center also has a dedicated state-of-the-art surgical suite for mothers needing a Caesarean section delivery.

The Center for Breast Health is accredited by the American College of Surgeon's National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). NAPBC accreditation is granted only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and is able to comply with established NAPBC standards.
