Mount Sinai South Nassau Opens New Operating Rooms to Expand Advanced Surgery

Mount Sinai South Nassau this week opened new operating room (OR) suites in the Feil Family Pavilion that will expand access to advanced procedures at its Oceanside campus. The new operating rooms are opening in phases. Five suites are now operational; four more will become operational later this year. The new suites are double the size of some existing operating rooms, allowing larger surgical teams to work with advanced technology and offer procedures that previously required patients to travel to Manhattan or the North Shore.

The suites feature open floor plans, high ceilings, enhanced lighting, and modern technologies, including robotic surgical assistants and three-dimensional image-guided surgical systems for minimally invasive and traditional procedures.

The suites are part of the hospital’s new nine-suite operating room complex on the second floor of the hospital’s four-story Feil Family Pavilion. The ORs are one floor above the Fennessy Family Emergency Department and are connected to it by a dedicated elevator to expedite care for Emergency Department patients who need immediate surgery.

The operating suites were more than 10 years in planning and are part of a $500 million capital improvement initiative that includes a patient pavilion, a $50 million Emergency Department expansion and renovation, 40 critical care suites, a power plant, and a parking garage.

“The opening of the new ORs marks a major milestone in the evolution and progress of our hospital,” said Joshua Kugler, MD, Interim President, Mount Sinai South Nassau. “The spacious design and new technology incorporated into the surgical suites will allow our surgeons to operate in a setting that will maximize their expertise while enhancing patient safety, comfort, and outcomes.”

“Our goal was to provide advanced care right on the South Shore so patients and families don’t have to travel to Manhattan, and these ORs will allow our surgeons to do just that,” said Tony Cancellieri, Co-Chair of the hospital’s Advisory Board and a Mount Sinai Health System board member.

Two of the nine surgical suites were designed and built for Mount Sinai South Nassau’s advanced cardiac surgery program, including open-heart surgery. Expected to begin treating patients later this year, the program will be the only one on Long Island staffed and overseen by surgeons from the Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, which is nationally ranked for cardiac surgery by Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report.

The OR suite also includes two hybrid operating rooms. These suites combine medical imaging equipment, including fluoroscopy C-arms (a type of portable X-ray), CT scanners, and MRI equipment, with surgical equipment to create an environment where surgeons can perform imaging, biopsies, diagnostic procedures, and surgery in the same room. This reduces the need to move a patient between imaging and surgical suites. Hybrid surgical suites are most often used for vascular surgery, as well as trauma, orthopedic, and gynecologic surgery. Studies indicate that hybrid operating rooms can result in improve patient outcomes and reduce procedure times.

“The new ORs provide an environment where we can expand the surgical capabilities of the hospital and enhance patient outcomes,” said Rajiv Datta, MD, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Medical Director of Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center. “With streamlined operating rooms and specialized equipment, we have the capacity to support larger surgical teams, improving both physician performance and patient care.

More than 12,000 surgeries are performed each year at Mount Sinai South Nassau, ranging from joint replacements and cancer surgery to cataract removal and neurosurgery. The new operating suites will increase scheduling capacity for same-day, elective, and emergency surgeries to meet the growing needs of residents in the communities served by the hospital.
