Becker’s Names South Nassau Hospital to Its 2014 List of 100 Hospitals with Great Women’s Health Programs

Becker's Hospital Review recently named South Nassau Communities Hospital to its 2014 listing of "100 Hospitals with Great Women's Health Programs" in the United States. This is the second consecutive year South Nassau has been named to the prestigious list.

South Nassau was selected based on its clinical excellence, quality care and awards for women's health services. The list was developed through extensive research and a rigorous review with peer organizations. Becker's Hospital Review is a bimonthly magazine published by ASC Communications located in Chicago, Ill. The magazine is read by many of the nation’s leading healthcare executives and policy makers.

A recipient of the New York State Department of Health’s Perinatal Quality Collaborative (NYSPQC) Obstetrical Improvement 2013 Quality Improvement Award, South Nassau’s Center for New Beginnings. team of compassionate, experienced maternity nurses, obstetricians and high-risk pregnancy specialists delivered 1,958 babies last year. In addition to advanced maternal-fetal medical technologies, the Center features 26 private family/newborn rooms with first-class hotel like accommodations, spacious labor and delivery rooms, and a 6-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Staffed by board-certified neonatologists, the NICU provides the specialized care and is equipped with the dedicated medical technologies that premature deliveries and newborns with developmental complications or conditions require. The Center also has a dedicated state-of-the-art surgical suite for mothers needing a Caesarean section delivery.

The center maintains a “five star” rating for patient safety and quality care from an independent national hospital and healthcare ratings organization. The rating is based on an in-depth evaluation of the quality of maternity, obstetrical and gynecological care over a three year period, in the 19 states, which includes New York, where hospital patient outcomes data is publically available.

Accredited by the American College of Surgeons National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), the Center for Breast Health (at South Nassau’s Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center offers a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary breast care program, with a full spectrum of clinical and support services, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling.

Complete Women’s Imaging (CWI), PC, provides the experts and advanced diagnostic technologies needed to detect breast disease in its earliest stage. A designated Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology, CWI offers an array of state-of-the-art diagnostic technologies, including digital mammography, high resolution ultrasound and MRI of the breast.

If a tumor or abnormality is detected, the Center for Breast Health at South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center offers advanced treatments for breast cancer and breast health complications and uses targeted surgical techniques that aim to preserve as much of the healthy breast and surrounding areas as possible, including oncoplastic surgical techniques. Oncoplasty combines surgical cancer removal with plastic surgery techniques to produce a superior cosmetic end result. For invasive breast cancer, these procedures may be accompanied by a sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary lymph node dissection if needed.

Advanced radiation techniques, including Contura™ multi-channel and Mammosite® single channel balloon brachytherapy techniques, which utilize a balloon catheter to deliver highly localized radiation to the lumpectomy bed, are also offered. Recommendations for whole-body or "systemic" treatments, such as hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of two of the three therapies, may follow either surgical approach.

The Center for Breast Health is accredited by the American College of Surgeon's National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). NAPBC accreditation is granted only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and is able to comply with established NAPBC standards.

South Nassau’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers women access to specialized health care for optimum treatment of reproductive health conditions, from endometrial biopsies and colposcopies to gynecologic oncology. At South Nassau's Women's Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders, all-too-common conditions such as incontinence and constipation, are effectively diagnosed and treated using state-of-the-art technology administered by highly skilled surgeons. This service is found in only a handful of locations in the country, and South Nassau is one of them.
