Types of Weight Loss Surgery
Whether or not surgery is right for you is a discussion you should have with your weight loss surgeon. But to help you get started, here are some things to consider:
At Mount Sinai South Nassau's Bariatric and Metabolic Program, we understand that making the decision to have weight loss surgery is a big step. It’s also a commitment to leading your healthy lifestyle. Our team is dedicated and experienced in helping you throughout your weight loss surgery process through education, support groups, and nutritional guidance.
Our experienced surgeons perform bariatric surgery laparoscopically or robotically, which means that the surgery is done through several small incisions. This allows for a faster recovery, and less incisional pain.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve Gastrectomy
For this procedure, a bariatric surgeon removes part of the stomach and shapes the remaining stomach into a tube or “sleeve.” Removing part of the stomach reduces the size of the stomach and restricts the amount of food you can eat, helping you feel fuller sooner. Estimated weight loss: 70-80 percent of excess weight loss over two years.
Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric Bypass Surgery
For this procedure, the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch by dividing and separating the upper portion of the stomach from the lower portion of the stomach. By creating a smaller stomach pouch, a gastric bypass limits the amount of food that you can consume. The surgeon then attaches a section of the small intestine directly to the pouch. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine which causes your body to absorb fewer calories.
LAP-BAND® Surgery
Adjustable LAP-BAND®
For this procedure, a bariatric surgeon places a thin, adjustable ring — or gastric band — around the upper part of the stomach. This divides the stomach into a small upper pouch (above the band) and a larger lower stomach (below the band). The degree of band tightness affects how much food you can eat and the length of time it takes for foods to leave the stomach pouch.
