Our Program
Introduction to the Internal Medicine Residency Program
Day in the Life of an Intern on Wards:
- 6:50AM-7:00AM: Arrive in the hospital and head to the cafeteria for a quick breakfast before heading to the IM Resident Lounge for sign-out.
- 7:00AM-7:10AM: Receive sign out on my patients from the night coverage intern.
- 7:10AM-9:30AM: Review labs, orders, overnight events of my patients. Receive new patients from the Hospitalist Office and review their chart. Pre-round on all my patients and check in to see how they are feeling. Prepare for rounds with attending.
- 9:30AM-11:30AM: Round with attending and multidisciplinary team which includes your co-intern and senior PGY2 resident, pharmacist, and sometimes nursing staff.
- 11:30AM-12:15PM: Place orders and consults discussed during rounds, begin preparing discharges, obtain lunch prior to lecture in the IM Resident Lounge.
- 12:15PM-1:15PM: Lecture/Chairman Rounds/Peer-to-Peer/Ambulatory Topics/Journal Club/Interdisciplinary Rounds/Wellness Hour/Monthly Resident Meetings
- 1:15PM-4:50PM: Update patients and their families, monitor patients’ hospital courses, write progress notes.
- 4:50PM-5:00PM: Sign out my patients to long-call intern and prepare to head home. The workday is now complete.

Continuity Clinic: Residents spend one afternoon per week in Continuity Clinic during all inpatient and subspecialty rotations, except for MICU Nights. They spend two sessions per week in Continuity Clinic during Ambulatory Medicine and research rotations.

Additional conferences are held every two to four weeks and include Journal Club, Morbidity and Mortality Conference, and a General Residency Conference (for residents in all specialties.)
