SIBSPlace
Survivorship in Brothers and Sisters
SIBSPlace® is a free prevention and support program for children ages 5 to 17, sponsored by Mount Sinai South Nassau. Since October 2000, this community-based program has provided children guided therapeutic activities in which unexpressed feelings and confusing experiences surrounding a family medical illness can be addressed.
A professional behavioral health staff, supported by trained volunteers, offers children opportunities to engage in therapeutic art, verbal activities and group discussion to improve self-awareness, expression and coping skills.
Individualized homework help throughout the school year and a free six-week camp during the summer for registered participants and parent support group are also provided. Additionally, bereavement services for children who have lost a sibling or parent is offered.
SIBSPlace helps to restore a child’s sense of balance that is often lost when a family member becomes seriously ill. Most importantly, it provides a safe place where children can have feelings validated and experiences normalized during a traumatic time in their lives.
