Lymphedema

Lymphedema is the buildup of lymph fluid in the arms or legs. Lymph fluid is usually filtered by lymph nodes, if these become obstructed or are removed, they can cause the fluid to back up into the limbs.

Symptoms

• Patients with lymphedema have swelling in one or more limbs that can progressively worsen. The swelling affects the fingers and toes and if severe enough, can affect mobility of the limbs
  
• Wounds, thickening of the skin and recurrent infections are present in patients with severe lymphedema
  

Diagnosis

• Our vascular surgeons can examine patients to determine if they have lymphedema.

Treatment

• Patients with early stage lymphedema should use compression dressings to prevent progression of disease.
  
• For severe lymphedema, patients should wear compression dressings and the use of pneumatic compression pumps. Some patients may benefit from physical therapy.
