NOJA Companion Volunteer Program

NOJA Companion Volunteer Program

At Mount Sinai South Nassau (MSSN) Hospital, No One Journeys Alone (NOJA)

No one is born alone, and in the best circumstances, no one dies alone. Yet, from time to time terminally ill patients come to MSSN who have neither family or close friends to be with them as they near the end of life.

NOJA, is a volunteer program in the Spiritual Care Services Department that provides the reassuring presence of a companion to dying patients who would otherwise be alone. With the support of the nursing staff, NOJA Companions are able to help provide patients with a priceless human gift: presence. The program also provides relief for the medical staff who cannot be at the dying patient’s bedside constantly.  The volunteers therefore become the voice, the touch and the humanity of the medical staff.

All MSSN employees (who are not on work duty) and volunteers are invited to participate in the NOJA program. NOJA Companions are asked to sign up for shifts of their choosing. Some may choose to serve on special day to honor or remember loved ones. When a new patient is identified, all NOJA volunteers available to help during that time will be notified and asked to respond quickly about their availability for one - four hour shifts.

For more information and/or to register as a volunteer, call the Spiritual Care department at 516-632-4586, email spiritualcareteam@snch.org, or complete and submit the form below.
