Multispecialty Mount Sinai Medical Care Facility to Open in Wantagh

A four-story multispecialty Mount Sinai ambulatory center is set to open in Wantagh next month, bringing an array of top-tier medical services to southeastern Nassau County under one roof.

Mount Sinai-Wantagh, located at 2020 Wantagh Avenue, just off Sunrise Highway, is set to begin a phased opening in mid-July. The new center represents a $70 million investment by Mount Sinai South Nassau, part of the Mount Sinai Health System, and will bring jobs and economic activity to Nassau County along with world-leading medical specialists.

When fully operational by year’s end, the new center will feature Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center services, including hematology/oncology, an infusion center, access to clinical trials as well as a dedicated chemotherapy mixing pharmacy and lab services. The completely refurbished building also will house a Women’s Center, a full radiology suite, orthopedics, pain management, cardiology, endocrinology, urology, neurology, and gastroenterology services.

“The facility represents the future of health care on Long Island,” said Adhi Sharma, MD, President, Mount Sinai South Nassau. “Traditionally, we have asked patients to travel to multiple sites for blood work, for X-rays, and then back to see a specialist. This new model puts all of that and more under one roof. It is much more patient-friendly. Also, having so many specialists under one roof allows for better collaboration and communication among those providing the care.”

The Wantagh site represents the fifth Mount Sinai ambulatory multispecialty center of its kind on Long Island. Mount Sinai Doctors-Greenlawn houses more than 20 specialties, Mount Sinai Doctors-Manhasset offers 14 specialties, and Mount Sinai Doctors-Carle Place has eight specialties in one location. Additionally, Mount Sinai Doctors-Long Beach opened in June 2023.

Mount Sinai-Wantagh’s practitioners are established community physicians, some of whom are relocating from existing Mount Sinai Doctors practices. The roster also includes skilled Mount Sinai physician specialists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses. Patients seen at Wantagh will be able to access their electronic health records via the MyMountSinai app as well as renew medications, schedule appointments, and obtain information about the care they receive from any Mount Sinai Doctors practice.

“We recognized the need for this kind of facility in southeastern Nassau more than nine years ago, and we are delighted that it has become a reality so we can provide exceptional healthcare to  a greater number of patients in the communities that we serve,” said Joseph Fennessy, a Mount Sinai board member and Wantagh resident and former chair and co-chair of Mount Sinai South Nassau’s board of directors before it transitioned to a Community Advisory Board.

“We find a way’ isn’t just a slogan at Mount Sinai—it’s a promise to the hundreds of communities and hundreds of thousands of patients we serve throughout Long Island and the metro area,” said Kelly Cassano, DO, Executive Vice President and Chief of Ambulatory Care for the Mount Sinai Health System, Chief Executive Officer of the Mount Sinai Doctors Faculty Practice, and Dean for Ambulatory Operations at Icahn Mount Sinai.

“This new facility is one more example of Mount Sinai fulfilling a community need with a forward-looking patient care model at its core. Patients will be seen here, diagnosed here, and treated here. Whether it is a cardiac or cancer or other issue, lives will be saved in this facility through early detection and treatment.”

The facility also will bring nearly 200 jobs to Wantagh. More than 100 new jobs have already been posted. A job fair was held in early May to recruit from the local community.

The exterior of the facility has been refurbished to mirror the aesthetics of the Wantagh business district and community. The facility includes 24/7 parking spaces for patients and staff. There are no overnight hospital beds at the site and no emergency services. It is a by-appointment-only medical office building.

After purchasing the site in 2016, Mount Sinai South Nassau conducted extensive outreach with the residents and businesses of Wantagh, addressing concerns about parking and traffic, and eventually winning zoning approval in the spring of 2022 from the Town of Hempstead.

The new Wantagh site features an attractive, patient-centered interior design and décor. It includes 74 modern patient examination and consultation rooms as well as comfortably furnished waiting areas. To maintain a hygienic environment, the facility also incorporates a hospital-grade air filtration system and spacious elevators along with touchless and motion control entryways. The total project cost of the renovation and refurbishment is $70.9 million.

Initially, the hours for most clinical services will be 8 am-5 pm, Monday-Friday. Hours on select weekday evenings and on Saturday mornings may be phased in over time as warranted by patient demand.
