Mount Sinai South Nassau Names New Chief Medical Officer

Mount Sinai South Nassau has named Alan Wong, DO, an experienced health care quality and patient safety administrator, as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs to help oversee ongoing efforts to combat COVID-19 and chart a course for post-pandemic initiatives.

Dr. Wong succeeds Adhi Sharma, MD, who was named the hospital’s new President on September 1, 2021.

“Dr. Wong is highly regarded for his clinical acumen, strategic leadership, and collegial approach,” said Dr. Sharma. “I am confident he will fit in well to our team and help move us forward to better serve the community.”

As Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Wong will be responsible for overseeing all operations related to the effective and efficient delivery of quality care. He also will facilitate medical staff interactions with hospital administration and the board of directors. He will also oversee strategic planning as well as monitoring the effectiveness of management practices and productivity indicators.

Dr. Wong’s pursuit of a career in medicine took root when he was a student at the highly regarded Bronx High School of Science. It was there that he developed a curiosity and passion for the science of medicine, biology and the human anatomy. As a high school student, he served as a research volunteer at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.  He is the first member of his family to pursue a medical degree.

Dr. Wong maintains board certification in five medical specialties: Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care, Neuro-Critical Care, and Hospice and Palliative Care. Board certification in medical specialties is recognized as a central commitment to advancing quality of care by providing guidance about best practices and fostering improvements in performance through measurement and feedback.

Prior to joining Mount South Nassau, Dr. Wong served at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, New York, where he was Vice President for Patient Safety, Chief Quality Officer, and Chair of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Wong attended medical school at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine where he earned his Doctorate of Osteopathy as well as a Master’s in Business Administration. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at NYU Langone Long Island Hospital (formerly Winthrop University Hospital) in Mineola, New York.
