Mount Sinai South Nassau is the only hospital on the South Shore to be awarded the highest possible rating of “High Performing” in maternity care in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report® “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.”
This is the second consecutive year that Mount Sinai South Nassau has been awarded the rating, which reflects the hospital’s:
- Reduced C-section delivery rate
- Low rate of early elective delivery rate
- Reduced risk for unexpected newborn complications
- Increased rate of routine VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section)
- High rate of exclusive infant breastfeeding
- Low rate of episiotomy
- Commitment to routine birthing-friendly practices
- Transparency on racial/ethnic disparities

An all-time high of 680 hospitals from across the country that provide labor and delivery services submitted detailed data to be considered for the ratings.
The U.S. News “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care” methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as cesarean section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breastfeeding rates, early elective delivery rates, and vaginal birth after C-section rates, among others.

In addition to the U.S. News rating, Mount Sinai South Nassau also is designated as a “Baby Friendly” hospital by the World Health Organization.
Mount Sinai South Nassau is ranked among the “Best Regional Hospitals” in the New York metro area in the 2023-24 U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” list, which was released in August, and was awarded nine “High Performing” badges, for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, hip fracture, kidney failure, pneumonia, and stroke, as well as for the specialty of urology.
In 2023, more than 2,008 babies were born at Mount Sinai South Nassau.
The hospital’s Women’s and Children’s Services’ Mother-Baby (maternity) Unit features 26 private rooms with first-class hotel-like accommodations, spacious labor and delivery rooms, and a six-bed Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Maternal-fetal services also are offered for high-risk pregnancies.
Premature babies and newborns with developmental complications or conditions receive the specialized care they need in the hospital’s Level II NICU. Staffed by board certified neonatologists and highly trained nurses, the unit is equipped with dedicated medical technologies for premature newborns and newborns with special needs. For mothers who require a C-section, the surgery is performed in a dedicated state-of-the-art surgical suite on the Labor and Delivery unit to ensure that they experience family-centered care.
Parents experience the entire birth process in the comfort of the unit’s private labor and delivery suites and continue to learn about and bond with their newborns in spacious and private postpartum rooms. Central to the Women and Children’s family-centered philosophy is its visitation policy, allowing the support person or significant other to remain with the mother and baby 24 hours a day. Other members of the family can visit the mother and a new baby during visiting hours to celebrate and participate in this special event.
The accommodations and compassionate care are complemented by meals prepared by an award-winning culinary services department and a comprehensive parent-child education program, which helps parents prepare for pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and beyond.
