Meet Sophia, 7, of Long Beach, NY

I got a call from my daughter’s school. Sophia had fallen, scraping her hand and knee. The school nurse said Sophia had a foreign object in her hand, but to me it looked like a bone was sticking out. So, I rushed her over to the The Long Beach Emergency Department as fast as I could.

We spent just a short time in the waiting room. The doctors quickly ordered X-rays and tended to her bloodied knee. After the doctors determined that the “foreign object” was not a bone, but a large pebble embedded in her hand, they called in a plastic surgeon who removed it and stitched it up — right there on-site.

The doctors, nurses and the entire staff worked well together. It seemed like everyone was on the same page. They told us what to expect, play-by-play, and they were on top of everything. We hope we’re never in that situation again, but if we are, it’s reassuring to know the expert staff is close by to provide excellent care.
