For the patient, benefits may include significantly less pain, less blood loss, less scarring, shorter recovery time, a faster return to normal daily activities, and in many cases, better clinical outcomes. The types of surgeries performed at South Nassau include: prostatectomy, kidney cancer, uterine prolapse, fibroids, cervical and uterine cancer, endometriosis, menorrhagia (excessive bleeding), pulmonary lobectomy, and colorectal cancer.

The first facility on Long Island approved by the NYS Department of Health to use this remarkable radiosurgery tool, South Nassau is the only hospital on Long Island with the Gamma Knife. Not a knife at all, the Gamma Knife is the most advanced non-surgical treatment for deep-seated or surgically inaccessible brain abnormalities, benign and malignant brain tumors, acoustic neuromas and the chronic pain of trigeminal neuralgia.
The Long Island Gamma Knife at South Nassau Communities Hospital recently achieved an unprecedented milestone for Long Island-based hospitals, treating its 1000th patient.

The Novalis Tx is a powerful radiosurgery system that offers state-of-the-art, non-invasive treatment for a wide range of malignancies and other potentially debilitating conditions, without harming nearby healthy tissue and without involving traditional surgery. The Novalis Tx is suitable for treating cancers of the prostate, lung, spine, brain, liver, and pancreas, as well as treating recurrent tumors or previously irradiated tissues.
The Novalis Tx with SmartArc technology delivers your treatments in a single arc, administering a continuously modulated dose to the entire tumor in just minutes. And while conventional radiation treatments may require up to 45 treatment sessions, Novalis Tx treats most cancers in five sessions or fewer. In addition, Novalis Tx treatment is usually painless and does not require anesthesia. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis and, unlike conventional surgery, there is no scarring or disfigurement and little risk of infection.
Your oncologist will determine if Novalis Tx treatment is right for you, but for more information and to meet the South Nassau Radiation Oncology Team, click here.
