<video:description>Tamar Lemoine, 68, talks about her journey after she was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, at Mount Sinai South Nassau's Breast Cancer Awareness Event. Christine Hodyl, DO, Director of Breast Health Services, the primary physician and surgeon for Ms. Lemoine, aimed to preserve as much of the healthy breast and surrounding tissue as possible. Dhvani Thakker, MD, Director of Women’s Medical Oncology discussed the rising rate of cancers in adults between the ages of 18 and 49. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women after skin cancer. Fortunately, mammograms and new treatments have pushed the disease's five-year survival rate to 90%. <video:title>Charles B. “They called me their ‘miracle patient,’ but South Nassau saved my life.”</video:title>
<video:description>In July 2014, I collapsed and was rushed to South Nassau’s emergency room. While in the ER, my wife was informed that I needed emergency surgery to repair a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. I was bleeding internally and was given a 5 percent chance of survival.

I spent four months in rehabilitation. I’ve had a few setbacks since then and it’s been a long recovery process, but I’m getting stronger every day. South Nassau’s vascular team is fantastic.

The surgeons and nurses tell me I’m their miracle patient, but if it wasn’t for their experience, teamwork and quick decisions, I wouldn’t be alive today.</video:description>

<video:description>Heidi was getting ready for my grandson’s birthday, when all of a sudden I became weak. I thought I was coming down with the flu. Before going to sleep, I called my son and told him that something didn’t feel right. We took no chances and called 911. The paramedics arrived and within minutes I was in cardiac arrest.

I woke up a few days later and after many tests the doctors determined that the upper part of my heart wasn’t sending signals to the bottom part to pump blood and that’s why my heart stopped. I was fitted with an ICD to treat my irregular heartbeat. After the procedure, I’m back to normal, I’m energetic and I feel great.</video:description>

<video:title>Are you coping with chronic orthopedic pain? Joyce Levy can tell you where to go for relief.</video:title>
<video:description>Too many people try to live with painful, debilitating orthopedic conditions, whether in the back, knee, shoulder or hip.

That once included sprightly 84 year old great grandmother Joyce Levy. In the late 1980s, Joyce began to experience low back pain that worsened and intensified with each passing year. She tried chiropractors, acupuncturists, physical therapy, epidural pain management and religiously strapped on a waist support day-after-day to stem the pain – but none of it helped.

The beginning of the end of Joyce’s painful journey started when her doctor referred her to South Nassau Communities Hospital’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics.

The next morning, Joyce walked down a hallway without pain. “I felt like I had wings at that point. The nurses said I should use a walker for safety reasons, but I didn’t need it.”</video:description>

<video:title>Stop the Bleed - Mount Sinai South Nassau</video:title>
<video:description>Stop the Bleed is a national program that was developed after the Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut. As a result, many national groups such as the Hartford Consensus, US Military, US EMT Association and the American College of Surgeons came together under a White House initiative and formed Stop the Bleed. The program is about an hour long, incorporating a PowerPoint as well as hands-on practice with tourniquets and packing wounds, and holding firm, continuous pressure. The program is designed for all laypersons to be able to learn how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and to immediately respond using either a tourniquet and/or packing a wound and holding continuous pressure until EMS arrives.

Mount Sinai South Nassau employees have trained over 1,800 people in Stop the Bleed in 2018. The desire for this program to be presented in schools and community settings is growing tremendously. Please contact Allison Anderson to set up a FREE one-hour training. #stopthebleed

<video:title>‘Truth in Medicine’ Poll: Women Under 50 Are Most Stressed Out as Holidays Approach</video:title>
<video:description>Women under 50 are the most stressed out as the holidays approach, with 61 percent saying their stress level is high or very high, according to the latest ‘Truth in Medicine’ poll of New York metro area residents.

Stress increases across the board during the holidays, with 46 percent of those polled reporting high or very high levels of holiday-induced anxiety. During non-holiday periods, 31 percent overall rate their stress as very high (5 percent) or high (26 percent).

As for specific factors that cause the most stress, finances and family were the two top reasons chosen among all those polled, with 25 percent rating debt and financial concerns associated with the holidays as stress-inducing and 20 percent saying family issues raised their stress levels. But when asked to choose the top three (out of five) reasons for holiday stress, a plurality of respondents volunteered that all factors—finances, family, overscheduling, shopping, and overeating—cause stress.</video:description>

<video:title>South Nassau ‘Truth in Medicine’ Poll: Vaping</video:title>
<video:description>Eighty percent of parents think vaping is addictive, and 63 percent think that it is unsafe. And, when asked whether or not they support vape shops in their community, 56 percent of parents said they oppose them, and 32% support allowing them to open, according to the latest South Nassau ‘Truth in Medicine’ Poll, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Twelve percent answered they are not sure.

Eighty-five percent of metro area parents are concerned that kids under 18 are curious about vaping, which may suggest a need for more education about e-cigarettes and similar vaping products, their addictiveness and whether or not they are regulated by the government.

The New York State Department of Health has said that e-cigarette use is “a major public health concern” and notes that e-cigarette use among young people is at a record high. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2018, nearly 1 of every 5 (20.8%) high school students reported that they had used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days. This is up from 1.5 percent in 2011. Learn more at: www.southnassau.org/truth</video:description>

<video:title>South Nassau ‘Truth in Medicine’ Poll: Human Papillomavirus (“HPV”)</video:title>
<video:description>More than one-third of metro area parents are not aware of CDC recommendations to vaccinate against human papillomavirus (“HPV”), a potentially cancer causing disease, according to the latest South Nassau ‘Truth in Medicine’ Poll, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

Sixty-one percent of parents have or plan to vaccinate all of their children while 37% percent of parents do not plan to or are not sure if they will vaccinate all of their children against HPV. When asked why they do not plan to vaccinate, 56% are unable to answer, indicate they need to gather more information, or did not know it was for boys. Nineteen percent of these parents believe the HPV vaccine is dangerous.

HPV is a very common virus. Nearly 80 million people—both men and women—are currently infected, with approximately 14 million new people becoming infected each year. HPV affects people of all ages, but it is most common among 25-35 year olds. Many people with HPV never develop symptoms and the virus goes away by itself, but for about 1 in 10 people, it can last longer and may cause certain cancers, such as cervical cancer and other diseases and cancers. <video:description>Fifty-percent of metro area New York residents support legalizing recreational marijuana, but 74% of respondents expressed concern about people driving under the influence of marijuana and 57% are unaware that currently no field sobriety test exists to test for marijuana use among drivers, according to the latest South Nassau 'Truth in Medicine' Poll, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

Respondents were split as to whether or not they believe marijuana is addictive with 54% saying they believe it is. Results were similar as to whether or not marijuana is a “gateway” or a habit-forming drug that may lead to other drug use with 49 percent of respondents believing it can lead to other drug usage.

<video:description>Metro-area children are spending an average of 3.41 hours/day of screen time for non-academic purposes on an array of devices - smartphones, televisions, tablets and computers – and 22 percent of them are glued to the screen for five or more hours, according to South Nassau’s latest Truth in Medicine™ poll.

Sixty-five percent of children are spending three or more hours per day on such devices, the poll showed.

Only 25% of parents say their efforts to limit screen time for their children are very successful, according to the poll of parents in New York City and on Long Island. Sixty-two percent of parents said they do not use any parental control settings on their children's screen devices.</video:description>

<video:description>Men are less likely to receive potentially life-saving screenings for cancer, according to the latest South Nassau Truth in Medicine poll of metro area residents.

<video:title>South Nassau Truth In Medicine Poll: Many Parents Remain Unclear About Safety of Vaccines</video:title>
<video:description>Some parents remain uncertain about the safety of vaccines and some mistakenly believe there is a link between autism and getting their children vaccinated, despite overwhelming scientific evidence pointing to the benefits of vaccinations in the fight against the spread of deadly childhood diseases.

While over 90% of area parents say they have had their children vaccinated, almost 40% are unsure or believe that vaccines can potentially cause autism, according to the latest South Nassau Truth in Medicine™ poll of metro area residents.

The South Nassau Truth in Medicine Poll, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, surveyed 600 residents of Long Island and New York City as part of South Nassau’s effort to gather data about public attitudes on key public health topics and help spur public education to improve health. This is the third South Nassau poll this year. Two earlier polls gauged public attitudes about going to work with the flu and about the dangers of antibiotic overuse.</video:description>

<video:description>In January, 2020, Mount Sinai South Nassau began construction of a new, energy-efficient $90 million Central Utility Plant. The new plant will upgrade the hospital’s electrical, heating, ventilation and cooling systems and fortify the hospital’s infrastructure against potential future storms. The plant also will help provide power for a planned four-story addition with new operating suites, an expanded emergency department and 40 new critical care beds, all of which is part of a more than $400 million long-term strategic growth initiative designed to improve service for patients across the South Shore of Long Island. Hundreds of building trade jobs will be created as these projects are constructed.</video:description>

<video:description>Shalom and Iris Maidenbaum, founders of Maidenbaum Property Tax Reduction Group and prominent Long Island philanthropists, have generously made a significant gift donated to Mount Sinai South Nassau to honor healthcare workers.

A newly constructed park in front of the Oceanside hospital will serve as a space to commemorate the selfless efforts of nurses, doctors, and support staff who bravely cared for thousands of critically ill patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mount Sinai South Nassau will dedicate this 10,000 square-foot park as "Maidenbaum Health Care Heroes Plaza."

me a new lease on life and I am taking full advantage of it.”

Here Bill Regan's story and what the affiliation has meant for him.</video:description>
