Sleeve Gastrectomy
What Sleeve Gastrectomy?
For this procedure, a bariatric surgeon removes part of the stomach and shapes the remaining stomach into a tube or “sleeve.”
How is Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery done?
The surgeon uses a laparoscope, which allows the surgery to be done through one or several small incisions in the abdomen, or stomach area.
How does Sleeve Gastrectomy help me lose weight?
Removing part of the stomach reduces the size of the stomach and restricts the amount of food you can eat at one time, helping you feel fuller sooner. Estimated weight loss: 70-80 percent of excess weight loss over two years.

Advantages of the Sleeve Gastrectomy
- Reduced size of stomach, increases feeling of fullness
- Does not require disconnecting or reconnecting of the intestines
- Stomach functions normally, allowing most foods to be eaten in smaller amounts
- Less invasive than gastric bypass
- Removes gland that secretes ghrelin, the hunger hormone
- No foreign bodies (bands, tubes, etc.) permanently inside body
- No risk of "dumping syndrome" typically associated with gastric bypass
