South Nassau’s Center for Sleep Medicine

Don’t Put Your Health On Hold

We were here for you before COVID, and we’re here for you now. Don’t put off seeking medical care, including elective surgery, in fear of COVID-19. Mount Sinai South Nassau now has dedicated non-COVID patient care areas, including within our Emergency Department. All of our units have undergone a deep cleaning to ensure our patients’ safety, and all patients undergoing procedures are tested for COVID-19 within five days prior to admission. Learn how Mount Sinai South Nassau is keeping our patients safe.

Because good sleep is so important to good health, the staff at Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Center for Sleep Medicine has worked to make our center the leading sleep diagnostic center on South Shore. Our experts evaluate and treat adults and children who have health conditions that cause difficulty sleeping — difficulty that not only affects quality of life, but that can sometimes be life-threatening.

Led by physicians with advanced training in the subspecialty of sleep medicine, our patient-centered team is dedicated to finding the underlying causes of sleep disorders and identifying the best treatment. We are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the only professional society dedicated exclusively to the medical subspecialty of sleep medicine.

Do You Have a Sleep Disorder?

Common symptoms of sleep disorders include:

  • Snoring
  • Tiredness
  • Not feeling rested during the day
  • Having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep
  • Having trouble waking up

Common causes of sleep disorders include:

  • Sleep apnea, in which people stop breathing briefly during sleep; this can be related to heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other health conditions, and can also make these conditions worse
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Insomnia, or having problems falling or staying asleep
  • Periodic limb movement disorder
  • Restless leg syndrome

Diagnosing the Cause

Key to diagnosis for many people is our sleep lab, a cozy, comfortable, private bedroom with a hotel-style experience, where patients spend the night. While patients sleep, staff monitor breathing, blood pressure and other information that will help our physicians diagnose the cause of any disorder and how severe it is.

The beautiful center was recently renovated with our patients’ comfort and safety in mind.

After your sleep study is completed, we will send a report to your primary care physician along with a personalized treatment plan to improve your sleep. We will also work with your physician to monitor your sleep condition. And for you and your sleep partners, we offer education and support services.
