Regular exercise is extremely important for maintaining your weight loss. Your bariatric surgery team will help you with the types of exercise to do before surgery and how soon after surgery you can return to them.
Diet After Surgery
Generally, after surgery, you should eat three small meals and two snacks a day, for a total of about 1,000 calories. Your first meals after surgery will be liquid, and then small portions of puréed foods will be introduced. Finally, small portions of healthy foods will be part of your regular diet. Foods high in sugar and other carbohydrates should be avoided.
Long-Term Follow-Up and Support
Patients who take advantage of all their options for follow-up after surgery are more successful in reaching and maintaining their weight loss goals and avoiding complications.
South Nassau’s long-term follow-up focuses on identifying and treating problems early. We help with:
- Nutritional counseling
- Any complications from surgery
- Reviewing and adjusting medicines you take, including those related to the health benefits of weight loss
- Monitoring for vitamin and mineral deficiencies
- Identifying “plateaus” in weight loss, where you might temporarily slow how fast you’re losing weight, and why
- Weight gain and strategies to avoid it
Loose Skin After Weight Loss
Some patients have excess skin in the months following weight loss. So our bariatric team includes a skilled plastic surgeon experienced in removing loose skin.
Support Groups: A Building Block to Your Success
Patients who attend support groups regularly after weight loss surgery have also been shown to lose more weight than those who do not attend. We also welcome people to come before their procedure. The free meetings are the perfect opportunity to meet and share information with other patients. We cover nutritional, social and medical issues related to weight loss surgery.
We offer two different support groups: one devoted to gastric bypass/gastric sleeve, and the other to gastric band (LAP-BAND®) surgery:
