Richard J. Murphy
President & CEO

As President and CEO, Mr. Murphy oversees all hospital operations. Mr. Murphy came to South Nassau from Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) on Staten Island, where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer. His accomplishments include the execution of a successful financial post divestiture from St. Vincent's Catholic Medical Center of New York, which improved facility operating performance; and development of a strategic planning process to enhance physician partnerships, increase market share and expand capital reinvestment. His past experience also includes his leadership in Long Island's Catholic Health System, as the Executive Vice President of CHS's Suffolk Region hospitals, which included his serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Good Samaritan, St. Charles and St. Catherine of Siena hospitals.

William Allison, CPA
Senior Vice President for Administration and Chief Operating Officer

Mr. Allison is the Senior Vice President of Health Policy and Planning and Chief Operations Officer for South Nassau. In his role, he is responsible for directing the overall operations of the hospital as well as the development of South Nassau’s strategic planning process and serving as the hospital’s primary contact for state and federal policy initiatives.

Prior to his current role at South Nassau, he served as Vice President of Economics, Finance, and Information for the Hospital Association of New York State’s (HANYS). He was a strong presence to downstate hospitals following Superstorm Sandy as they worked to assess financial impacts, file FEMA claims, and rebuild.

Mr. Allison has a long history of work in Long Island and New York hospitals, including the Catholic Health System, South Nassau, and St. Vincent’s.

Mark Bogen, CPA
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer 
As Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Bogen directs our organization's financial planning related to growth, financing and associated issues. He also coordinates our relationships with auditors, third-party reimbursement agents, managed care companies, investment bankers and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY). He brings us more than 35 years of experience in health care financial operations and is active in numerous public accounting and health care financial management associations. His professional memberships include the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants; the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; the Healthcare Financial Management Association; and the Health Care Compliance Association.   

Joe Calderone
Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications & Development

Mr. Calderone is responsible for directing the development of South Nassau’s corporate communication strategy and the formulation of a development plan to enhance the hospital’s philanthropic mission within its community service area. He serves as the hospital’s primary spokesperson on various public issues and corporate communications. His oversight includes direction of hospital publications, including periodicals, journals, press releases, advertisements and other communication tools which effectively communicate hospitals plans and issues. As the hospital’s lead development administrator, he develops personal and business relationships with philanthropic organizations and individuals designed to enhance direct giving, fundraising, grants and other related events.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, Mr. Calderone also serves as an adjunct professor of journalism at New York University. During his tenure as a reporter at Newsday, he was a member of a Newsday team that won a Pulitzer Prize for local reporting.

Paul D. Giordano
Senior Vice President, Human Resources

As Senior VP of the Human Resources Department, Mr. Giordano is responsible for all recruitment and retention activities, employee relations, employee benefit and recognition programs, employee health, volunteers and cultural initiatives.

Sue Penque, PhD, RN, CNP
Senior Vice President; Chief Nursing Officer, Patient Care Services

Dr. Penque is responsible for planning, coordinating and delivery of quality nursing care to patients in the hospital and ensuring that the same superior standards are met throughout our organization, wherever nursing care is delivered. Areas of responsibility include Perioperative Services including Endoscopy, Emergency Services, Cardiac Services, including the Cardiac Catheterization, Electrophysiology and Cardiovascular Labs, Dialysis Services, including the Outpatient Dialysis Center, and all inpatients units. She holds degrees from CW Post College and Adelphi University, certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner from College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN, and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Minnesota. She is the recipient of many honors and awards for her work in the field of nursing, and has also authored a number of medical publications and research papers for the advancement of nursing and patient safety.

Ruth Ragusa, RN
Senior Vice President for Quality and Care Management
As Senior Vice President for Quality and Care Management, Ms. Ragusa, in concert with the Chief Medical Officer, is responsible for developing the strategies and best practices that enhance and maintain the quality of care and services provided by the Hospital. She oversees performance improvement, regulatory affairs, patient satisfaction, patient safety, Joint Commission accreditation and other regulatory affairs.  Ms. Ragusa is also responsible to  ensure an effective Emergency Preparedness plan as well as a focus on care management and  transition of care.


Adhi Sharma, MD

Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Sharma oversees the hospital’s office of Medical Affairs and is the hospital’s administrative liaison to the hospital’s medical staff. Working with physician leaders and senior administrators, Dr. Sharma adds valuable perspective on critical programs and initiatives which are vital to the quality services delivered by South Nassau.

Dr. Sharma holds a medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla. He holds a fellowship in Medical Toxicology from New York University’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

Prior to his work at South Nassau, Dr. Sharma served as Vice President and COO at Progressive Emergency Physicians and as Chair of the Departments of Emergency Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY and Victory Memorial Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.

Alex Balko, CPA
Vice President, Finance

As Vice President of Finance, Balko is responsible for directing the day-to-day financial operations at South Nassau and hospitalwide business plans. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Healthcare Financial Management Association and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Noah Caldwell
Vice President of Information Services

Mr. Caldwell has responsibility for the tactical implementation of the South Nassau Communities Hospital Information Technology Strategic Plan. Possessing over 30 years of experience in the field of Healthcare Information Technology, Mr. Caldwell served as Senior Vice President and CIO at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, NY for 23 years and most recently spent 3 years as a Technical/Strategic Information Technology consultant. Mr. Caldwell holds a B.S. Organization Management. 

Mark Head
Vice President, External Affairs

As Vice President of External Affairs, Head oversees our strategic planning and marketing efforts. He also directs the communications, public relations and community relations to bring South Nassau’s key messages to physicians and members of the communities we serve. He has practiced marketing management, graphic design and creative direction for more than 20 years.   

Ken Long
Vice President of Administration

Mr. Long brings over 20 years of clinical and administrative experience to his position at South Nasaau. Among his responsibilities will be administrative oversight of building the hospital’s key service lines. Mr. Long holds a Bachelors of Arts in Health Science and a Master of Arts in Physical Therapy from Touro College. He also successfully completed the Academy for Healthcare Leadership Advancement program offered at Cornell University.

Joanne Newcombe, RN
Vice President for Community Health Development

Ms. Newcombe is responsible for developing and leading the clinical and administrative operations of programs related to community health, including family medicine, behavioral health, home health care, community education, transitional care, and the SIBSPlace program.

William Ulrich
Vice President Facility Planning and Development

As South Nassau’s Vice President of Administration, Ulrich oversees day-to-day functions of our hospital for the design, development and construction group; environmental services; safety and security; engineering; and bioengineering. He played a key role in the Renaissance Project's capital development initative and the North Addition project, an expansive, five-story, 170,00 square-foot-facility.  

Joshua Yedvab
Vice President, Network Development

As the Vice President of Network Development, Yedvab enhances relationships with our physicians and other providers; grows new physician relationships; and develops innovative programs, strategies and partnerships.

Jennifer Clark
Assistant Vice President, Finance

As Assistant Vice President of Finance, Clark supervises the day-to-day functions of the Accounting and Finance departments. Areas of responsibility include payroll, budgeting, financial planning, reimbursement, accounts payable and general accounting. She is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.   

Michael DiTaranto

Assistant Vice President, Service Line Management

With over 30 years of Healthcare experience, Mr. DiTaranto is a leading Finance Professional who has consistently demonstrated leadership through his oversight of several Hospital Facilities during periods of significant growth and transformation. In a variety of capacities, he has advised on policy, resource utilization and expense management across the continuum of care. Among his responsibilities is financial oversight of the OB/GYN, Surgery and Cardiology Service Lines. Mr. DiTaranto has an MBA in Health Care Administration and Finance from Adelphi University and is a member of HFMA.

Melissa Hershfield

Assistant Vice President, Performance Management & Performance Improvement

Ms. Hershfield brings over 25 years of diverse experience in quality and nursing, as well as a passion for improving the patient experience and outcomes, to her role as the administrative leader for the Performance Management and Performance Improvement departments, ensuring the quality delivery of care. She holds a Master’s of Science in Nursing Leadership and is certified as a Healthcare Quality Professional.

Rita Regan

Rita Regan, RN
Assistant Vice President, Performance Management & Care Transitions

Working in close partnership with clinical and administrative leadership, Ms. Regan develops and oversees the implementation of organizational strategic initiatives to improve the patient/family experience and satisfaction; ensures that appropriate data reporting requirements to CMS, the Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies, are met; and develops innovative care transition strategies for patients with chronic diseases.

Laura Righter, RN
Assistant Vice President, Clinical Ancillary Services

As Assistant Vice President of Clinical Ancillary Services, Righter brings many years of medical administrative experience. She oversees the hospital’s wound care program, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation therapy programs, orthopedic service line, language services, radiology services and laboratory services. She holds a BSN from Adelphi’s School of Nursing and an MBA from Dowling College.

Richard Rosenhagen, MBA, RHIA
Assistant Vice President, Data Management

Rosenhagen works with business users with expert knowledge of business processes to determine which data should be utilized within those processes and the most appropriate source(s) for that data. He is responsible for providing an information management infrastructure in support of the organizational demands for relevant and high-quality business data in support of effective business intelligence analytics and decision making. His many years of experience in the health information management profession as a Registered Health Information Administrator bring an awareness of the importance of quality clinical documentation. Rosenhagen is a longtime active member of the HFMA's Metropolitan New York Chapter. He holds a master’s degree in executive management from St. John's University.

Andrew Triolo
Assistant Vice President, Design, Development & Construction

In his role with South Nassau, Triolo oversees the departments of Design, Development and Construction, as well as property management for our main campus and all off-site facilities. He serves as the architectural and administrative liaison for strategic planning and program development. He also leads master facilities planning for South Nassau's integrated health care delivery system.
