Feil Family Pavilion (J Wing) Project - April 23, 2021

Ambulance access to Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Emergency Department bays will no longer be possible from Oceanside Road; all ambulances must enter the ED bays via the Nassau Parkway entrance.

This change is necessary to accommodate construction on the hospital’s new J Wing, which will nearly double the capacity of the hospital’s current Emergency Department.

This traffic change affects ambulance traffic only! Walk-in patients to the Emergency Department will continue to enter Emergency Department lot from Oceanside Road.

Project Overview

The proposed four-story addition to the existing Mount Sinai South Nassau campus will nearly double the size of the existing Emergency Department, add 9 new operating rooms and a new Critical Care Unit as the need for intensive care is projected to grow in our South Shore Communities.

Community Benefits

Need - The new addition will help meet projected medical needs for the entire South Shore of Nassau County, including Long Beach, as patients coming to the Oceanside hospital are generally sicker and trending older when they arrive, often in our Emergency Department, which is currently undersized for the number of patients we treat annually.

Economic Benefit - The $113M FEMA project will yield building trade jobs over the course of the multi-year construction program. These investments will provide a major source of economic activity in the community for decades by creating additional quality, high-paying jobs, and by generating the kinds of secondary economic benefits that ripple throughout the community and surrounding region.

Project Details

Critical Care - The number of patients in need of highly specialized care provided in critical care units is on the rise, and South Nassau forecasts a need to increase the number of critical care beds available.

Emergency Care - The Emergency Department (ED) will nearly double in size – to the approximate length of a football field – and will be upgraded and expanded to an estimated 50 treatment areas, expanded ambulance bays, better lines of sight for physicians & nursing staff, as well as improved waiting areas, and separate areas for Pediatric and Behavioral Health. The ED currently treats approximately 65,000 patients a year, but was built to handle 35,000 per year. Projections indicate a future volume of 80,000 patients per year in Oceanside.

Operating Rooms - The new addition will include nine new operating rooms that will substantially increase the size of our current operating suites, allowing for the inclusion of modern robotic and diagnostic equipment used by today’s surgeons.

Patient Experience - The patient experience in the Oceanside Emergency Department will be enhanced via improved access and comfort, including larger and enhanced Patient Treatment Areas, Observation and Family Waiting Rooms and separate entrances for walk-in patients and ambulances.

Cost Estimate

FEMA and HUD will provide a total of $158M for the Feil Family Pavilion (J Wing), Central Utility Plant, Emergency Electrical Infrastructure and Long Beach Medical Arts Pavilion (including $4M from HUD). However, the total cost of these four projects is estimated to cost $278M, including the $28 million parking structure in Oceanside. The difference will be made up by Mount Sinai South Nassau from its own resources.
