Ambulatory Surgery

Our Ambulatory Surgery Unit (A.S.U.) stands at the center of a health care evolution, connecting you with the caring experienced hands of a qualified surgeon and the healing power of modern medical technology.

South Nassau’s Ambulatory Surgery Unit is a state-of-the-art facility that features 10 semi-private, pre-operative patient suites where the patient is admitted prior to surgery, and 16 semi-private, post-operative rooms, where the patient will complete phase two of their recovery, receive pain medication and post-op teaching prior to their discharge to home. The A.S.U. post-op unit is open 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday, for patients who may be required to stay overnight for discharge the following day. The A.S.U. post-op unit is also available for outpatient blood transfusions and outpatient I.V. infusions. Even after discharge, our skilled, post-op, registered nurses are available to speak with you about your procedure, answering your questions with care, patience and compassion. You will routinely receive a telephone call from our A.S.U. post-op RN on the day after your surgery to follow up on your post-op progress, the effectiveness of your post-op pain management, and your satisfaction with our surgical services.

The Operating Room

South Nassau Communities Hospital Operating Room consists of 12 operating suites which are available for both inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures. A full range of surgical specialties are performed which include: orthopedics, spine surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, gastrointestinal surgery, laparoscopic bariatric surgery (minimally invasive surgery for weight loss), urology, ophthalmology, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, podiatric surgery, pediatric surgery, ear, nose and throat surgery and general surgery.

Using the latest in state-of-the-art tools and techniques, such as microendoscopic disectomy, unicompartmental knee replacement, computer-assisted total knee replacement, charite disk replacement, laparoscopic nephrectomy, video-assisted thoracoscopy for lung resection, brachytherapy seed implantation, our team of skilled surgical professionals perform highly complex procedures on an outpatient basis resulting in:

The Operating Rooms are open 7 days a week/24 hours a day. Physicians are assisted by expertly trained surgical nurses who deliver the highest quality care and consistently achieve positive patient outcome. The Operating Room is available to patients of all ages from infant to adult.

The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit

Recover under the watchful eyes of our highly-skilled, professional, registered nurses who are specially-trained in post-anesthesia care.

The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (P.A.C.U.) is a 16 bed, state-of-the-art, critical care unit that provides immediate phase one post-anesthesia care 24 hours a day to patients of all ages from infant to adult. The P.A.C.U. registered nurses monitor patients who have undergone surgical procedures and who have received general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, epidural anesthesia, or I.V. sedation. Hemodynamic monitoring and post-operative pain management are provided for both inpatients and outpatients.

The P.A.C.U. includes one isolation room and provides care to approximately 850 pediatric and adult patients each month. It is staffed by highly-skilled, registered nurses who are trained in basic life support and advanced cardiac life support (adult and pediatric). An anesthesiologist provides on-call coverage for the P.A.C.U. 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

The Endoscopy Unit

South Nassau Communities Hospital Endoscopy Unit provides state-of-the-art patient care for both inpatients and outpatients requiring upper or lower G.I. studies.

Our G.I. Endoscopy services include:
  • E.R.C.P. Studies (endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography) for the intensive study of the gall bladder, pancreas and bile ducts.
  • Endoscopic ultrasound to examine the walls and the surrounding structures of the gastrointestinal system. If an abnormal growth is discovered, the physician can measure its size and depth which is critical information for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
  • Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure to view the gastrointestinal system including the esophagus, stomach and colon.
  • Liver biopsy takes a sampling of the liver with minimal discomfort and a shortened recovery time.
  • The Endoscopy Unit also performs PH monitoring and motility studies using the “Bravo” Capsule.
The G.I. physicians are assisted by specially G.I. trained registered nurses. The Endoscopy Unit is open Monday through Friday, from 6:00AM to 7:00PM.
