Annual Auction Raises $315,000 for SIBSPlace
Featuring glamorous jewelry, distinctive ornaments, sophisticated objets d'art and premium sports memorabilia, The Council to South Nassau Communities Hospital’s 2008 Auction raised $315,000 in support of SIBSPlace (Survivorship in Brothers and Sisters). SIBSPlace is a support program offered by South Nassau for children coping with a seriously-ill sibling or parent.
The auction was held at The Carltun in Eisenhower Park, and featured live and silent auctions and a delectable four-course dinner. Items and goods that captured the attention of the guests included an acoustic guitar signed by Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, vacations for two, golf outings for four, state-of-the-art home entertainment electronics and accessories, outdoor sporting goods, and gift certificates to first-rate restaurants and local tourist attractions.
Philanthropist and long time co-chair of the Auction, Mrs. Helene Wrenn, was the event’s guest of honor.
“Mrs. Wrenn’s selflessness, generosity, and goodwill have been vital to the growth of the hospital,” said Joseph A. Quagliata, President & CEO of South Nassau. “Her good works have empowered South Nassau and SIBSPlace to fulfill their mission and vision.”
The goal of SIBSPlace is to promote a safe-haven for children whose childhood has been interrupted due to a sibling or parent suffering with cancer or another type of devastating illness. The only program of its kind in the United States, it is available, free, to all children ages 5-17. SIBSPlace provides a comprehensive program of support and guided recreation led by mental health specialists, where emotional, educational, and personal needs can be addressed. Psycho-educational groups, yoga, mentoring and tutoring, art and pet therapy, and field trips to local attractions are all a part of what makes SIBSPlace special and important to children and the community. SIBSPlace also offers a well- attended parent support group, thus addressing the families’ needs and concerns.
“On behalf of South Nassau Communities Hospital and SIBSPlace, I thank each and every person, both volunteers and guests, who supported the Auction and SIBSPlace. We are grateful for the generous outpouring and look forward to another successful benefit in 2009,” said
Mr. Michael Schamroth, a long time member of South Nassau’s Board of Directors and benefactor and founder of SIBSPlace.
