Freeport Resident is New York State’s MVP…that is, "Most Valuable Patient"
Oceanside, NY – The Home Care Association of New York State awarded its 2007 Annual Patient Award to Freeport resident Mercedes Villanueva.
Paralyzed from the neck down since suffering a major stroke in 2001 at the age of 52, Mrs. Villanueva received the award at a special presentation ceremony held in her home.
With her husband, Segundo, and her healthcare team at her side, Mrs. Villanueva received the award from Nancy Helenek, RN, MSN, FABC, Administrative Director, Care Continuum, South Nassau Communities Hospital Home Care.
After spending many months in a nursing home recovering from the stroke, Mrs. Villanueva was discharged to the nurturing care of her husband, Segundo, and South Nassau’s Long-Term Home Healthcare Program.
Members of the healthcare team will tell you that Mrs. Villanueva has a gentle personality and a deep love for her husband that is matched by his love for her. She is inspired by visits from family and friends, and each member of her healthcare team is counted as part of her family.
Mrs. Villanueva has the strength to whisper, “thank you” and to sit on the edge of her bed for 2-3 minutes with support and 3-5 seconds without support. “These actions show Mrs. Villanueva‘s determination to live the best possible life despite her physical limitations,” said Ms. Helenek. “She leads a fulfilling life that exceeds the boundaries of her physical limitations and the walls of her home.”
