From the Program Director

Osteopathic Director

The three years of residency training in family medicine are possibly the most important in one’s entire medical education. Our program is committed to providing the best possible educational experience for the resident. The Family Medicine Residency Program at South Nassau Communities Hospital is a suburban, community-based, medical school-affiliated program, with easy access to the resources of both New York City and beautiful Long Island.

Our residency is fully accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). This accreditation allows osteopathic residents to obtain board certification from the AOA. Osteopathic and allopathic residents work together as a team throughout the three-year academic program.

At South Nassau, osteopathic principles and practice are emphasized throughout your training. Our goal is for you to build upon your osteopathic training from medical school, and actively teach you the practical application of osteopathic manipulative treatment in the clinical setting. Osteopathic residents have dedicated OMM teaching clinic sessions where they can perfect their manual skills. Inpatient OMM rounds demonstrate how OMT can be used to address the special needs of hospitalized patients. OMM lectures help reinforce previous knowledge as well as present new techniques. In short, OMM is taught in manner that promotes not only competence, but confidence as well.

I invite you to learn more about our program at South Nassau.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Carrao, DO
