South Nassau’s 5K Walk & Health Fair to Help Raise Funds for Feil Cancer Center Patients

A Day for Free Screenings, Music, Food, Games & Family Fun. In agreement with Hippocrates, who said, “Walking is man’s best medicine,” South Nassau Communities Hospital will host its new 5K Walk for Cancer Care & Health Fair on Sunday, September 25th to raise funds for the cancer center Supported by Hewlett House and the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, the 5K Walk will be occur in the peaceful and pleasant neighborhood surrounding the hospital from 9 -10AM and the free Health Fair and Fall festival will be held outside and in the hospital’s parking lot from 10AM – 3PM.

Park Avenue Extended Care in Long Beach is the naming sponsor of the 5K Walk for Cancer Care & Health Fair, while Lynbrook Restorative Therapy & Nursing is serving as this year’s entertainment sponsor. All funds raised through the 5K Walk and the Health Fair will support patients at South Nassau’s Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center. There is no fee to walk. Each walker is being asked to raise at least $100 via the Crowdrise website by finding five sponsors to pledge at $20 each. High school and college students may be able to fulfill public service requirements by participating in the 5K Walk and fundraising efforts.

 “Cancer is a disease that touches so many families,” said Dr. Rajiv Datta, Chairman of South Nassau’s Department of Surgery. “Our cancer specialists at South Nassau take a team approach to treating the disease and we have some of the finest cancer experts on Long Island. We’re grateful for the community’s support.”

“Our 5K and Health Fair is an opportunity to connect directly with the communities we serve,” said South Nassau’s President & CEO, Richard J. Murphy. “It promises to be a fun day for the entire family while also raising funds for a very worthy cause.”

All funds raised at the 5K Walk for the Cancer Center will go directly toward assisting patients and families impacted by the disease. This year’s goal is to raise $50,000 for Cancer Center patients.

The proceeds from the 5K Walk will be used to support patient care programs and needs, including:

  • Transportation support between treatment and services
  • Housecleaning, child care, elder care to support compliance with patient’s treatment plans
  • Other expenses related to a patient’s cancer diagnosis (support with medication, insurance, physical therapy, etc.)
  • Support patient’s to receive wigs/bras, etc.
  • Development and expansion of patient support groups
  • Development and distribution of patient education materials
  • Development and support for cancer awareness and prevention programs for the community and SNCH staff
  • Development of programs to reduce barriers to cancer screening and cancer care.

The South Nassau Health Fair, after the 5K Walk, will feature fun activities for the whole family. Raffle tickets to be entered in drawings for a variety of gift baskets will be given free to all residents who take advantage of free health screenings for prostate cancer and cardiac risk factors including cholesterol, Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood pressure, as well as screenings for asthma, head & neck cancers and sleep assessment.

From start to finish during the 5K Walk and Health fair, South Nassau’s main parking lot will be host to live entertainment featuring local talent sponsored by the School of Rock in Rockville, marital arts demonstrations by Shaolin Self-Defense Centre in Oceanside, an array of fun and challenging carnival games and food vendors offering delectable foods and refreshments.
