Honoring: Geri Barish, President – 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition; Executive Director, Hewlett House

For nearly 30 years, Geri Barish has been at the forefront of the battle against cancer on
Long Island. As a breast cancer activist and President of 1 in 9: The Long Island Breast
Cancer Awareness Coalition, she has raised public awareness, advocated for cancer
survivors, spearheaded changes to local, state and federal legislation and helped clean
up toxins and cancer-causing chemicals in our environment .

Her appointment as Executive Director of Hewlett House fullls a vow Ms. Barish made to herself years ago when she was stricken with breast cancer: to ensure that no one would have to battle the disease alone.

South Nassau’s Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center in Valley Stream has an enduring relationship with Ms. Barish and Hewlett House, a restored historic farmhouse that serves as an educational resource and outreach center for cancer patients and their families. Recently, Ms. Barish has expanded Hewlett House’s services to include a boutique at the Feil Center, where breast cancer survivors can receive consultations and ttings for wigs, headscarves and post-mastectomy bras. In addition, she leads a bi-weekly breast cancer support group at the hospital for women newly diagnosed with cancer or who are undergoing treatment.

Ms. Barish has earned the distinction of being New York State’s preeminent breast cancer activist and has received numerous awards, recognitions and achievements from local, county, state and national organizations as well as media outlets.
