Get With The Guidelines – Stroke

South Nassau has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes South Nassau’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

To receive the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Silver Plus Performance Achievement Award, South Nassau consistently complied for at least one year with the requirements of the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program. These include aggressive use of medications like antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation. This twelve-month evaluation period is the second in an ongoing self-evaluation by the hospital to continually reach the 85 percent compliance level needed to sustain this award. In addition, the hospital is now part of the Target: Stroke Honor Roll for reaching a door to thrombolytic time of less than 60 minutes for a minimum of 50% of eligible patients.

"At South Nassau, we understand that treating stroke means getting the patient the right treatment at the right time,” said Linda S. Efferen, M.D. and chief medical officer. “With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and knowing how to identify a stroke as well as administer the proper treatment within the Guidelines parameters is crucial to a successful recovery."
